“Boroume at the Farmers’ Market” is an initiative by Boroume, a non profit organization which to coordinates actions against food waste and acts towards using spare food for the public benefit.

For the specific initiative Boroume organizes and coordinates volunteer groups, twice a week, to collect unsold, highly nutritious food from the stalls of the farmers’ markets and to subsequently distribute it to stakeholders of the same area who are helping people who live in food insecurity and have no regular access to nutritious food. Supplemenary benefits are the strengthening of social solidarity in local communities, the reduction of the environmental burden of organic waste that ends up in landfills, and the acquisition of practical experience (volunteers, producers, street market customers) on the benefits and easiness of saving food.

By recording impressive results regarding the volume of food collected and the number of beneficiaries, “Boroume at the Farmers’ Market” is a functional model of networking between various stakeholders while at the same time if suggests a new approach in tackling food waste. An approach which can be adopted in other areas and/or by other community groups.
